history
of the company
Pursued by a Bear Productions was formed in 1999 by director Stuart Mullins
and RSC actor Joseph Millson and quickly established a reputation for
delivering exciting, cutting edge productions. The first commissioned
writer was Craig Baxter who wrote The Animals (Dublin Theatre
Festival), Monogamy (Riverside studios) and The Ministry
of Pleasure (Theatre 503). In 2003 Troy Andrew Fairclough’s
first play You Don’t Kiss (Oval House and Tour) won the
Newnham New Writing Award and in 2004 PBAB & Theatre 503 mounted the
dazzling and critically acclaimed All Fall Away by Said Sayrafiezadeh
Awarded The Guardian’s **** Critics choice and described as “Poetry
in emotion…touching and terrific” by The Times. In 2005 Pieces
of Me by Hong Khaou – was movingly produced with the Chinese
and Vietnamese communities on the (now demolished) Ferrier Estate in Greenwich.
Pursued by a Bear subsequently moved to Farnham Maltings, Stuart Mullins
formed Theatre Is… and Director Alex Clifton joined us as the new
AD directing Yorgin Oxo - The Man by Thomas Crowe (Theatre 503),
another hugely successful production with a Time Out **** Critic’s
Choice for it’s ‘Imagination and charm’. In the summer
of 2006 Alex produced SK8 with Farnham’s Dance Movement
a riveting community show around Waverley skate parks featuring teenage
skateboarders, an opera singer and a film maker. In November 2006 Helena
Bell joined Pursued by a Bear as its new Artistic Director. PBAB’s
latest community film The Ghost of Ockford Ridge (Feb 2007) is
a delightfully funny, spoof documentary made by television writer and
filmmaker Grant Watson, YT Director Liz Landon and ten young people from
Godalming filming in and around the Ockford Ridge Estate.
